Project Overview

A leading shopfitting company was tasked with designing and installing a new shop front for a high-profile retail space. As part of the project, they were required to ensure the shop front met strict fire safety regulations, particularly achieving a Euroclass B rating for fire resistance. This requirement was crucial to comply with insurance standards and provide enhanced fire protection for the premises.

The Challenge

The shopfitter initially faced difficulties in sourcing a suitable fire-rated coating. Many products on the market failed to meet the required performance levels, or they lacked the necessary certifications to satisfy insurance requirements. Some coatings provided inadequate fire resistance, while others were impractical for application on wood substrates used in the shop front design.

The Solution: Intercoat EBS 2019 Range

After extensive searching, the shopfitter was introduced to Intercoat Paints and their EBS 2019 range. This product stood out due to its proven fire-retardant properties, specifically designed to improve the fire resistance of wood.

Wood typically has a Euroclass D fire rating, but with the application of Intercoat’s EBS 2019 range, it was possible to achieve Euroclass B, meeting the required standard for the project. Specifically, the product classification of B-s2,d1 meant that it provided:

• Limited combustibility (B rating)
• Moderate smoke production (s2)
• No flaming droplets (d0)

Additionally, an alternative product from Intercoat’s range, Irufire, was capable of achieving an even higher rating of B-s1,d0, which indicated lower smoke production (s1) while still maintaining the same fire resistance.

Implementation and Results

The shopfitting team conducted on-site tests to ensure the coating was suitable for their specific wood materials. The EBS 2019 range proved easy to apply, adhered well to the wood, and dried effectively without compromising the aesthetics of the shop front.

By using Intercoat’s fire-rated coatings, the company successfully:

• Achieved Euroclass B-s2,d0 compliance for fire resistance
• Met all relevant insurance and safety standards
• Ensured enhanced protection for the retail space
• Completed the project on time and within budget
